TOTAL PUBLIC MEMBERS: 14
APPOINTMENT TYPE: Appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of Council
TERM LENGTH (YEARS): 3
RESIDENCY: District residency required, with strong preference for representation from all 8 wards
PAID BOARD: No (all roles are voluntary)

 

DESCRIPTION

The Board shall regulate the practice of barbers, body artists, and cosmetologists, including specialty cosmetology practices such as braiding, electrolysis, esthetics, manicuring and others as the Mayor may from time to time establish by rule, instructors and managers of these practices, and owners of such facilities.

COMMISSION MEMBERSHIP

The Board shall consist of the following 14 members:
  • 3 barbers;
  • 3 cosmetologists;
  • 3 specialty cosmetologists;
  • 3 body artists; and
  • 2 consumer members.
 

QUALIFICATIONS

Professional members shall have been engaged in one or more of the occupations regulated by the board for at least 3 years preceding appointment.

Consumer Members shall:
  • Be at least 18 years of age; 
  • Not be a practitioner of a profession or occupation supervised by that board, or in training to become one; 
  • Not have a household member who is a practitioner of a profession or occupation supervised by that board, or in training to become one; and 
  • Not own, operate, or be employed in or have a household member who owns, operates, or is employed in a business which has as its primary purpose the sale of goods or services to practitioners of a profession or occupation supervised by that board.

TIME COMMITMENT

The Board of Barber and Cosmetology meets monthly.
